Articulation Therapy: What Parents Need to Know

Articulation refers to how we physically produce speech sounds. When a child consistently substitutes, omits, or distorts sounds in a way that makes them hard to understand, articulation therapy can help.

What is articulation therapy?

Articulation therapy is a structured, play-based approach to teaching children how to correctly produce speech sounds. A speech-language pathologist works with the child to identify which sounds are affected, then uses targeted exercises and activities to build accurate production.

Which sound errors are normal?

Not every mispronunciation is a cause for concern. Children acquire sounds on a developmental timeline. By age 3: p, b, m, n, h, w. By age 4: t, d, k, g, f, y. By age 5-6: l, sh, ch, j. By age 7-8: s, z, r, th, v.

What does a session look like?

Sessions are typically 30-45 minutes and feel more like play than work, especially for younger children. Activities might include games, books, or crafts that naturally elicit the target sound. Parents are often coached on home practice strategies so progress continues between sessions.

How long does it take?

Progress varies depending on the number of sounds affected, the child's age, and how consistently home practice occurs. Many children make meaningful progress within a few months of consistent therapy.
